Some curtains are made to be easily hung. Some curtains need a little more finesse. While it’s perfectly acceptable to let the pattern or color do the talking when it comes to window treatments, there are also some interesting and unique ways to style your shades that bring a bit more character to a room.
Accentuate: If using puddle or panel curtains, make sure to hang them in a way that accentuates the room and makes it feel more dramatic. Hang them at least 12 inches above the window and ensure the rod reaches out three to six inches on either side. This will make the space look bigger and more lux.
Layer: Looking to create a statement without having to use a bright color or pattern? Layering in curtain styles can help turn any window into a focal point of the room. For example, a sheer curtain with a subtle pattern works beautifully when flanked by panel curtains, either on both sides or a solo panel curtain swept to the side. Or opt for wood blinds paired with a stunning Roman shade.
Play: No matter panel curtains or cafe curtains, get bold with patterns and color. You don’t have to stick to neutrals to make a statement. Instead, choose a complementary color to the rest of the room or find a pattern that plays well with wallpaper. There is no reason not to get playful with window treatments, especially since they can be changed or swapped for a new season or a simple refresh.
Style: When picking out curtains, don’t think that uniform is the key to creating style! In fact, it is quite the opposite. Each room in the home gives you a new way to create a focal point and call out special elements, and the same is true for curtains. Allow each room to have their own personality. While you can choose shades of the same color if your home tends to carry the same colors throughout, play with patterns, texture and layers to make each room special.
