Between Stanley Tucci and “White Lotus,” Italy is having a cultural moment. And while it may be hard to book a flight for all your friends and family, hosting an Italian-style gathering at home may be just the way to scratch that Italian itch.
First things first: The tablescape. This will enchant guests the moment they walk into the dining room or yard, so the atmosphere must be on point. Our suggestion is to start with Amalfi Stripe in navy and white, layering up placemats with a tablerunner. Stripes are the signature in Amalfi, reflected in its striped Duomo down to the umbrellas that dot the beach.
Amalfi’s lemons are some of the most coveted in the world. Infused with more vitamin C than others (location, location, location), these lemons are an important part of the culture. So, decorate with lemons (in bowls! Hurricane vases! Sliced for the water jug!) and other shades of yellow to bring the taste of the coast to the table.
Now that you’ve set the scene, it’s time to eat and drink like a Coastal Italian! Prosciutto, Mozzarella di bufala, figs, and grilled octopus, among other bites, will transport guests starting with the appetzer course. While the food needs to be on point, serving up some Amalfi-style drinks will get the party started fast - and keep it going.
While you can’t go wrong with an Aperol Spritz, nothing says Amalfi like a lemon-based aperitif. Try this recipe for a Sgroppino, a sipper that will both surprise and delight guests.
