Designing a table is more than just arranging dinnerware; it’s an art form that sets the tone for an entire meal, gathering, or celebration. As a designer, I’ve learned that the key to creating a truly stunning table is starting with an emotion—specifically, the feeling a color can evoke. From there, every element of the table comes together in harmony, each piece enhancing the others. Here's how I approach the process:
1. Start with a Color That Inspires You
When I begin designing a table, I like to center my entire vision around a color that makes me feel good in the moment. Color has such a powerful effect on mood, and I’ve found that when I choose a shade that brings me joy, it reflects in the overall atmosphere of the setting. It might be a soft, serene blue that reminds me of the ocean, or a vibrant, warm terracotta that brings to mind cozy, autumnal evenings.
The color you choose will set the tone for the entire design. It influences everything from the linens to the florals. Color not only adds beauty but also creates an emotional connection with your guests, enhancing their dining experience before the first dish is even served. With the holidays put away, I started to crave pink. For this I created this pink and white table accented with delicate bows, and a subtle Valentine feel.
2. Select Linens That Complement
Once I have a color in mind, I move on to linens. Tablecloths, napkins, placemats —these tactile pieces do more than just protect the table; they offer a chance to weave texture and depth into the overall design. The fabric choice is as important as the color—whether it’s a luxurious linen for a refined look or a more casual cotton for an easy, laid-back feel. I love linen for so many different reasons. Over the past year I’ve been doing tons of research on linen and it’s an amazing fabric to have in the home. When linen is sought after, Solino Home is where I go.
I always aim to balance the color palette and add variety through texture. When creating this table the pink linens from Solino Home came to mind. Their patterns and soft hues of pink were the perfect match for this table. Their linens are amazing quality, and last forever. I love choosing linens that aren’t too bold so that I’m able to reuse them for different seasons, and occasions.
3. Choose Plates That Align with the Theme
Next comes the selection of plates, which can often be the focal point of the table. This is where I can get a little creative. Plates need to not only match the color palette but also the vibe I’m aiming for. A modern, sleek table may call for minimalist, clean white plates, while a more rustic setting might lend itself to earthenware with a hand-crafted feel.
I also consider layering the plates—perhaps a charger to add elegance or mixing and matching different patterns to create an eclectic, curated look. The plates should feel like they belong to the environment, adding to the table's overall story.
4. Florals for a Touch of Freshness
Florals are my favorite way to elevate a table. Once the linens and plates are in place, I turn my attention to the florals. The right flowers can tie everything together and provide a refreshing burst of life. I usually go for something in-season, both for its freshness and because it naturally reflects the current moment.
The floral arrangement can be simple—perhaps just a single vase of wildflowers—or more elaborate with an intricate centerpiece. I take care to choose blooms that either complement or contrast with the table’s color scheme, ensuring they don't overpower the other elements but still make a statement.
5. Finalize with Thoughtful Details
Finally, I add the small touches—the finishing details that elevate a table from simply well-set to truly memorable. This could include candles to add warmth and ambiance, place cards to personalize the space, or little accents like ribbon-tied napkins or unique serving utensils.
The beauty of the details is in their subtlety; they don't have to be extravagant, but they should feel intentional. Sometimes it’s the small things, like a single sprig of rosemary on each plate or a delicate gold rimmed glass, that bring everything to life. These touches invite conversation and make guests feel like every part of the meal has been thoughtfully curated just for them.
In the end, table design is about more than just aesthetics—it’s about creating a space where people feel welcomed and celebrated. Whether you’re hosting a large gathering or an intimate dinner, following this process can help transform any meal into a memorable experience.
